Highlights

The report below provides initial details of the recent held Canadian elections. It highlights the broad distribution of electoral seats by party. As well as the broad changes that took place since the former 2021 election. The data is based on provisional results obtained from Elections Canada(Elections Canada, 2025b). Based on these provisional results the liberal party stands three seats short of a majority in the commons with 169 seats.

Other highlights:

  • Liberals retain majority but fall short of 172 necessary to pass legislation in Commons on own

  • Margin over Conservatives narrows

  • Greatest losses in support from NDP and Bloc Quebecois

  • Liberals lost significant support in Ontario but gained in Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, and, Manitoba

  • Alberta and Saskatchewan remain solidly conservative

  • Quebec, Nova Scotia remain solidly liberal

  • Ontario - the largest province in electoral ballots cast stays liberal though with reduced support and narrower margins

Method

The primary aim in this research was to better understand how to take data stored in shp files and merge that data with content such as the election statistics. The shp files contained polygon data that related to electoral districts.

With the assistance of Grok, Chatgpt, and Mistral code was generated in python and R to handle the integration of these data sets and produce the tables and charts in the report.
