Ranking Key Oil and Gas Export Ports

Overview
This report examines tanker traffic data for oil and gas producing countries collected by the IMF’s Portwatch(International Monetary Fund (IMF), 2025) service. We first present tanker total trade (tanker export and tanker import volume) by country and port and then focus on exports by country and port. We identify the active ports engaged in that trade. In a follow up report will create time series of export activity for selected ports. Our goal here has been to identify the key oil and gas trading hubs.
As we explained in an earlier note(ML, 2025) the service provides weekly vessel data that tracks port calls and volume of imports and exports by way of satellite and AIS communications. For our purpose in this report we have narrowed the dataset down to just tanker port calls, imports and exports.
Our focus is on tankers which we define as including crude oil, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas and other gases.
